Let me ask you something. When was the last time you actually looked forward to a workout?

I'm Matt, and I run Muscles Matter. I'm also an ex-rugby player who spent years doing training sessions I absolutely dreaded. Endless laps. Mind-numbing treadmill sessions. Workouts that felt like punishment rather than something that was actually good for me.

And here's what I learned the hard way: if you hate your workout, you won't stick with it. Simple as that.

So today, I want to talk about something that might sound a bit radical. Your workout should be fun. Not tolerable. Not "bearable once you get going." Actually, genuinely enjoyable.

The Problem with "No Pain, No Gain"

We've all heard it. That toxic little phrase that's been floating around gyms since the dawn of time. No pain, no gain.

And look, I get it. There's something to be said for pushing through discomfort. For challenging yourself. For doing hard things.

But somewhere along the line, we confused "challenging" with "miserable."

Person looking bored on a treadmill in a gym, symbolising tedious workouts and lack of workout motivation.

Here's the truth that nobody tells you: you don't have to suffer to get fit. You don't have to force yourself onto equipment you hate. You don't have to drag yourself to classes that make you want to cry.

If you hate the treadmill, don't do it.

I'll say that again because it's important. If you hate the treadmill, DON'T DO IT.

There are literally hundreds of ways to move your body. Why on earth would you choose the one that makes you miserable?

Why Enjoyment Actually Matters (It's Science, Not Just Feelings)

This isn't just me being soft. There's actual research behind this.

When you enjoy your workouts, your brain releases endorphins, those natural mood boosters that reduce stress and anxiety. But here's the kicker: when you're having fun, you're also more likely to push yourself harder without even realising it.

Think about it. When you're playing a sport you love, or dancing to your favourite music, or hiking up a beautiful trail with a mate… you're not clock-watching. You're not counting down the minutes until it's over.

You're just moving. And you're probably moving a lot more than you would on that dreaded treadmill.

Fun isn't just nice to have. It's essential for long-term fitness success.

And as a personal trainer, I've seen this play out hundreds of times. The clients who find movement they enjoy? They stick with it. They get results. The ones who force themselves through workouts they hate? They burn out within weeks.

Muscles Matter

For Everyone Who Doesn't Like Gyms

Right, let's address the elephant in the room.

Not everyone likes gyms. And that's completely fine.

Some people find them intimidating. Others find them boring. Some just hate the whole fluorescent-lights-and-mirror-walls vibe. All of these are valid reasons.

The fitness industry has done a pretty good job of making people feel like the gym is the ONLY way to get fit. It's not.

Here are some alternatives that might actually spark joy:

  • Walking or hiking – Seriously underrated. Fresh air, changing scenery, no equipment needed.
  • Swimming – Gentle on the joints, works your whole body, and feels more like play than exercise.
  • Dancing – Stick on your favourite playlist in your living room. Nobody's watching.
  • Sports – Football, tennis, badminton, rock climbing… remember when movement was called "playing"?
  • Home workouts – No commute, no waiting for equipment, workout in your pants if you want.
  • Outdoor boot camps – Get the coaching without the gym walls.

The key is finding what works for YOU. Not what works for your mate. Not what some influencer says you should do. What genuinely makes you feel good.

How to Actually Find Your Thing

Alright, so how do you figure out what kind of movement you actually enjoy? Here's my practical approach:

1. Think Back to Childhood

What did you love doing as a kid? Climbing trees? Swimming? Kicking a ball around? Dancing to the radio?

Our childhood instincts about movement were usually spot-on before we learned to make fitness complicated.

2. Try Stuff Without Pressure

Give yourself permission to experiment without committing. Try a trial class. Go for a swim. Join a casual kickabout. See what clicks.

And if something doesn't feel right? Move on. No guilt required.

3. Focus on How It Makes You Feel

Not how many calories you burned. Not how it looked on paper. How did you actually FEEL during and after?

Energised? Happy? Relaxed? That's your body telling you something.

4. Consider the Social Element

Some people thrive with workout buddies. Others prefer solo sessions. Neither is wrong. Just figure out which one helps you stay consistent.

Group exercise can be brilliant for accountability. Working out with others creates a motivating atmosphere and makes you more likely to show up because people are counting on you.

The Injury Prevention Bonus

Here's something else worth mentioning. When you enjoy your movement, you're naturally better at injury prevention.

Why? Because you're not rushing through it just to get it over with. You're more present. More aware of your body. More likely to notice when something doesn't feel quite right.

Plus, when you actually want to exercise, you're more likely to warm up properly, cool down properly, and generally take care of yourself.

Compare that to the person who's forcing themselves through a workout they hate, cutting corners just to escape quicker. Recipe for pulled muscles and tweaked joints.

Making Online Personal Training Work for You

This is exactly why online personal training can be such a game-changer.

When I work with clients online, the first thing we figure out is what they actually enjoy. What equipment they have access to. What their life looks like. What makes them feel good.

Then we build a programme around THAT.

No forcing square pegs into round holes. No making you do exercises you hate just because they're "classic gym moves." We find what works for your body, your schedule, and your preferences.

Because here's what I've learned from years of working as a personal trainer: the best workout programme in the world is useless if you won't do it. A "good enough" programme that you actually enjoy and stick with? That's where the magic happens.

The Permission Slip You Needed

So consider this your official permission slip.

You don't have to run if you hate running. You don't have to lift heavy if it bores you. You don't have to step foot in a gym if that's not your thing.

You just have to move. Regularly. In ways that make you feel good.

That might be yoga in your living room. It might be hiking with your dog. It might be swimming lengths at your local pool. It might be finally joining that dance class you've been curious about for years.

Whatever it is, make it something you look forward to. Something that adds to your life rather than draining it.
