Look, I get it. The idea of booking a personal training consultation can feel a bit… intimidating. You're probably thinking about pushy sales tactics, being judged for your fitness level, or getting locked into something you're not ready for.
Let me stop you right there.
That's not how I work. Never has been, never will be.
I'm Matt, and I run Muscles Matter here in the UK. I'm an online coach and sports massage therapist, and honestly? I've been exactly where you might be right now. I've dealt with injuries that knocked me on my backside. I've had those moments of thinking "I need to sort this out" without knowing where to start.
So when I offer a free consultation, it's genuinely free. No strings. No pressure. Just a proper conversation about where you are and where you want to be.
What Actually Happens in a Free Consultation?
Here's the thing – a consultation isn't me showing up with a clipboard and a stopwatch, ready to put you through your paces. It's literally just a chat.
We'll talk about:
- What's brought you to this point (injury, weight loss, general fitness, whatever)
- What you've tried before (if anything)
- What your daily life looks like (because training needs to fit your schedule, not the other way around)
- Any niggles, pains, or limitations you're dealing with
- What success actually looks like for you

That last point is important. Your goals are YOUR goals. I'm not here to tell you what you should want. Want to deadlift twice your bodyweight? Brilliant. Just want to play with your kids without your back killing you? Equally brilliant.
There's no judgement. I've worked with complete beginners who've never set foot in a gym, and I've worked with people coming back from serious injuries. Everyone starts somewhere.
Why I Actually Understand Injury Recovery
This is where my background makes a difference.
I'm not just a PT who read about injury rehab in a textbook. I'm a qualified sports massage therapist who works hands-on with people recovering from all sorts of issues. Dodgy knees, angry shoulders, backs that went on strike – I've seen it all, and more importantly, I've helped people work through it.
And yeah, I've been through my own injury battles too. That's given me a perspective you can't get from a certification course. When someone tells me their hip's been playing up for six months, I KNOW that frustration. I know what it's like to modify movements, to feel limited, to wonder if you'll ever get back to normal.
That's the combination that makes Muscles Matter different. I can assess what's going on with your body from a soft tissue perspective, then design training that actually works WITH your body instead of against it.
Online PT vs Face-to-Face: What Works for You?
Right, so let's talk options. Because not everyone wants (or needs) the same thing.
Online Personal Training has been a game-changer for loads of my clients. Here's why:
You train on your schedule. Got weird shift patterns? Kids to juggle? Online PT doesn't care. You do your sessions when it works for you, and I'm there to guide you through the programme I've built specifically for you.
It's more affordable than 1-on-1 sessions. You're not paying for my time standing next to you, but you're still getting a fully personalised programme, regular check-ins, form feedback, and ongoing support.
You can train anywhere. Home gym? Actual gym? Hotel room when you're travelling? All good.

1-on-1 In-Person Sessions are brilliant for certain situations:
- You're coming back from an injury and need that hands-on guidance
- You're brand new to training and want someone physically there
- You've got specific movement patterns we need to really nail down
- You respond better to that direct accountability
During the consultation, we'll figure out which approach makes sense for you. And honestly? Sometimes it's a mix. Maybe we start with some in-person sessions to get the foundations right, then transition to online. Or you do mostly online with occasional in-person check-ins.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer, and that's fine.
What Makes a Good PT Client? (Spoiler: It's Not What You Think)
People often ask me what I'm looking for in a client. Like there's some fitness test you need to pass before I'll work with you.
The honest answer? The best clients are the ones who show up.
That's it.
I don't care if you can only manage twenty minutes twice a week. I don't care if you've got limitations that mean we need to get creative with exercises. I don't care if you're starting from absolute zero.
What matters is consistency and communication. If something's not working, tell me. If life gets mad and you miss a week, that's fine – just keep me in the loop. If an exercise hurts in a way it shouldn't, speak up.

The clients who get the best results aren't necessarily the fittest or the most experienced. They're the ones who trust the process, stay consistent (even when it's not perfect), and actually tell me when something needs adjusting.
"But I'm Not Ready Yet…"
I hear this a lot. People want to "get in shape first" before hiring a PT. Or they want to lose a bit of weight on their own first. Or they want to sort out their diet before thinking about training.
And look, I get the thinking behind it. But here's the thing – that's literally what I'm here to help with.
You don't need to be "ready." You just need to be willing to start.
If your diet's all over the place, we'll address that as part of the process. If you haven't exercised in years, that's fine – we'll build up gradually. If you're carrying an injury, that's actually my speciality.
The consultation exists specifically for people who aren't sure where to start. It's the starting point, not something you need to be prepared for.
The No-Pressure Promise
Right, let me be crystal clear about this because it matters.
When you book a free consultation with me, there is ZERO obligation to sign up for anything. None.
Maybe you'll decide you want to work together. Great.
Maybe you'll decide it's not the right time. Also fine.
Maybe you'll take the advice from our chat and go do your own thing. Genuinely, that's okay too.
I'd rather have a twenty-minute conversation that helps you make the right decision for YOU than pressure you into something that doesn't fit your life or your goals.

I've built Muscles Matter on people coming back because they want to, because they're getting results, because they feel supported. Not because they felt cornered into signing a contract.
What Happens After the Consultation?
If we both agree it makes sense to work together, here's what comes next:
We'll set up your programme based on everything we discussed. Whether that's online coaching or in-person sessions, you'll get a clear plan that's built specifically for your goals, your schedule, and any limitations we need to work around.
For online clients, you'll get access to your training platform with video demonstrations, the ability to log your sessions, and direct contact with me for questions or form checks.
For in-person clients, we'll book in your sessions and get cracking.
Either way, you're not on your own. I'm properly invested in helping you get results, which means regular communication, programme adjustments as you progress, and actual support when you need it.
Ready to Have That Chat?
If you've read this far, chances are something's resonating.
Maybe you're tired of putting it off. Maybe you've tried to sort things yourself and hit a wall. Maybe you're dealing with an injury that's limiting what you can do. Maybe you just want someone who actually knows what they're talking about to point you in the right direction.
Whatever it is, let's talk about it.
Book your free consultation through the Muscles Matter website. No commitment, no pressure, just an honest conversation about where you're at and how I might be able to help.
I'll bring the coffee. You bring your questions.
Let's figure this out together.
