I've been coaching clients online for years now, and there's one question I hear more than any other: "What's it actually like in the first month?"
Fair question. Starting online personal training can feel a bit like jumping into the deep end. You're investing time and money into something you've never tried before, and you want to know what you're getting into.
So let me walk you through exactly what happens in your first month working with an online personal trainer. No fluff, no sales pitch: just the reality of how it works.
Week One: The Discovery Phase
Your first week isn't about smashing yourself in the gym. It's about me getting to know YOU.
When you sign up, I'll send you a detailed questionnaire. And I mean detailed. I want to know your injury history, your daily routine, your stress levels, whether you're a morning person or a night owl, what equipment you have access to, and what's actually realistic for your schedule.
I'm also going to ask about your previous fitness experiences. Have you tried training before? What worked? What didn't? Why did you stop?
This stuff matters. I'm not building a cookie-cutter programme here: I'm creating something that fits your life.

Once I've got all that information, we'll jump on a video call. This is where we talk through your goals properly. Not just "I want to lose weight" or "I want to get stronger," but WHY those things matter to you. What changes when you achieve them?
Then I'll probably ask you to send me a few movement videos. Nothing fancy: just you doing a bodyweight squat, a press-up (or the best version you can manage), maybe a plank. I need to see how you move so I can spot any imbalances or limitations before we start loading you up with weights.
Week Two: Your First Proper Programme
By the end of week one or start of week two, your personalised programme lands in your app.
Everything's laid out clearly: exercises, sets, reps, rest periods, coaching cues. Each exercise has a video demo so you know exactly what you're doing. And if something's unclear? Message me. Seriously. I'd rather you ask than guess and do it wrong.
Your first few sessions will feel… manageable. That's deliberate.
I'm not trying to destroy you in week one. I'm building a foundation. Teaching you the movement patterns. Getting your body used to the exercises. Making sure your form is solid before we start ramping things up.
This is especially important if you're new to strength training or coming back after time off. Your ego might want to go harder, but your connective tissues need time to adapt.

You'll also start logging your sessions. After each workout, you'll record how it went: what weights you used, how the exercises felt, your energy levels. This feedback loop is HUGE. It's how I know whether to progress you, modify something, or change direction entirely.
Week Three: Finding Your Rhythm
By week three, you're settling into a routine. The exercises feel more familiar. You're learning what days work best for training. You're figuring out the communication rhythm.
This is also when reality bites a bit.
Life happens. You miss a session because work ran late. Or the kids were sick. Or you just didn't fancy it. And that's fine: it's normal. But this is where the remote accountability piece kicks in.
I'll check in if I notice you've gone quiet. Not to give you grief, but to see what's going on. Sometimes you just need a nudge. Sometimes we need to adjust the plan because what we thought would work… doesn't.
That's the beauty of online personal training: it adapts to you.

We'll also start fine-tuning things. Maybe one exercise doesn't quite work for you, so we swap it. Maybe you need more recovery between sessions. Maybe you're flying through the workouts and ready for more challenge.
This is all normal. Month one is as much about learning what works as it is about getting fitter.
Week Four: The First Check-In
Around week four, we'll do a proper review call.
We'll look at what's working, what isn't, and what needs to change. I'll ask about your energy levels, your recovery, how you're feeling mentally. Training isn't just about the physical stuff: your mindset and motivation matter too.
If you're a runner working with me as a running coach, this is where we'll look at how the strength training is translating to your runs. Are you feeling stronger? Moving better? Less achey?
We might take progress photos if that's something you're tracking. We might retest those initial movements to see if things have improved. But honestly, the biggest wins in month one are usually around consistency and confidence.
You've shown up. You've done the work. You've proven to yourself that you can stick to something.
That's massive.
What You'll Need (The Practical Stuff)
Let's talk equipment. You don't need a home gym to do online personal training, but a few basics make life easier:
- A decent phone or tablet for video calls and watching exercise demos
- Resistance bands (about £15-20 for a set)
- A pair of dumbbells to start with (you can always add more)
- A yoga mat if you're training at home
- Comfortable workout clothes that let you move freely
That's it. We can build an effective programme with just those items. And if you've got access to a gym, even better: we've got more tools to work with.

You'll also want a reliable internet connection for our video calls. The last thing you want is to be mid-squat when the call drops.
What to Expect From Me (Your Online Personal Trainer)
Here's what you'll get from me during your first month:
- Regular check-ins through the app (usually a few times per week)
- Form feedback when you send me videos
- Programme updates as we learn what works for you
- A weekly catch-up call (or fortnightly, depending on your package)
- Answers to your questions usually within 24 hours
- Accountability when you need it
- Flexibility when life gets in the way
What you won't get: judgment. Everyone starts somewhere. I've worked with complete beginners and experienced athletes. Your starting point doesn't matter: your commitment does.
The Honest Truth About Month One
Month one isn't about dramatic transformations. It's about laying groundwork.
You'll probably feel a bit sore (especially if you're new to this). You'll definitely feel out of your comfort zone at times. You might question whether it's working because you're not seeing massive changes yet.
That's all normal.
Real change takes time. The habits you build in month one: showing up consistently, moving well, communicating when you need help: those are what create results down the line.
By the end of month one, most of my clients tell me they feel more confident, more energised, and more capable than when they started. They're sleeping better. Moving better. Feeling more in control.
The physical changes are coming, but the mental shift happens first.
Ready to Get Started?
If you're thinking about trying online personal training, there's no perfect time to start. There's just… starting.
Your first month will be a learning curve for both of us. We'll figure out what works, what doesn't, and how to build something sustainable for you.
And if you've got questions about how it all works? Drop me a message. I'm always happy to chat through what online coaching looks like and whether it's right for you.
Let's make month one count.
