So you've decided to give online personal training a go. Brilliant choice. But if you're anything like most of my new clients, you're probably wondering what the first month actually looks like.

Will you be thrown into brutal workouts straight away? Will you need fancy equipment? And honestly, will this even work when your trainer isn't physically standing next to you?

I'm Matt, and I've been coaching clients online for years now: everyone from complete beginners to experienced runners looking to level up their game. And I can tell you right now: your first month isn't about smashing yourself into the ground. It's about building something that actually lasts.

Let me walk you through exactly what happens.

Week One: We're Getting to Know Each Other

Your first week with an online personal trainer isn't what most people expect. There's no pressure to prove yourself or turn up already fit.

We start with a proper conversation. I want to know about your life, your goals, your past injuries, what you've tried before, and what your average Tuesday actually looks like. Because here's the thing: I can design the perfect programme on paper, but if it doesn't fit your real life, it's useless.

During this initial consultation (which we usually do over a video call), we'll cover:

  • Your fitness goals and why they matter to you
  • Your current activity level and movement experience
  • Any niggles, injuries, or areas that give you grief
  • Your schedule, work commitments, and family life
  • What equipment you've got access to (if any)
  • How you prefer to train: morning person or evening warrior

I'll also ask you to send me some basic movement videos. Nothing fancy. Just you doing a squat, a lunge, maybe pushing and pulling movements. This gives me a proper look at how your body moves when I'm not there in person.

And honestly? Most people are nervous about these videos. Don't be. I'm not judging your form: I'm assessing where you're starting from so I can meet you there.

Week Two: Building Your Foundation (Not Breaking You)

This is where we actually start training, but it won't look how you might imagine.

Your second week is about learning, not suffering. I'm teaching you movement patterns, helping you understand proper form, and building the foundation we'll expand on later.

The workouts I send you will be manageable. Sometimes almost TOO manageable for keen clients who want to go harder. But there's method to this. I need to see how your body responds to training, how quickly you recover, and what intensity you can handle consistently.

You'll get your programme through our coaching app, complete with video demonstrations for every exercise. Each workout includes coaching notes: little tips I'd tell you if I was standing next to you.

And here's what makes online personal training different from just following a random programme: I'm checking in regularly. After each session, you'll log how it went, and I'll review your feedback. If something felt wrong, we adjust. If you loved a particular exercise, I'll make note. If you had a rubbish night's sleep and the workout felt impossible, we talk about it.

This is still personal training. I'm just not physically in the room with you.

Week Three: Finding Your Rhythm

By week three, most clients start to find their groove. You've figured out when you train best, the workouts feel less foreign, and you're starting to notice small wins.

Maybe you're not getting as knackered walking upstairs. Maybe that niggle in your shoulder is less annoying. Maybe you're just sleeping better.

This is also when I start to see patterns in your training. Are you always struggling on leg days? Do you skip the warm-up? Are you pushing too hard and ending up exhausted? As your running coach or online personal trainer, my job is to spot these things and help you course-correct before they become problems.

We'll also start talking about nutrition around now: not in a "here's your meal plan" way, but in an actual conversation about your eating habits and how they support (or sabotage) your training.

I don't do strict meal plans because they don't work for most people. Instead, we look at sustainable changes that fit your lifestyle. Small shifts that add up.

Week Four: Gaining Momentum

The final week of your first month is where things click. You've built consistency, learned the foundations, and your body is adapting to regular training.

This is when I start to progress your programme. Maybe we add weight, increase reps, or introduce more challenging variations. But it's gradual. Controlled. Based on how YOU'RE responding, not some generic 4-week programme template.

You'll also have developed better body awareness by this point. You can tell the difference between good muscle soreness and something that needs attention. You know when to push and when to pull back. You're learning to coach yourself day-to-day, which is honestly the whole point.

What You'll Actually Learn in Month One

Your first month of online personal training isn't just about getting fitter. You're learning skills that'll serve you for years:

Movement literacy: Understanding how your body works: what good squat form feels like, why your hip keeps clicking, how to brace your core properly.

Training consistency: Building the habit of regular exercise without burning yourself out or making it feel like punishment.

Body awareness: Recognizing your body's signals, understanding the difference between discomfort and pain, knowing when you need rest.

Recovery management: Learning that rest days aren't lazy days, understanding post-workout soreness, developing basic self-care habits.

Realistic expectations: Understanding that progress isn't linear, that some weeks are harder than others, and that's completely normal.

And here's what you WON'T learn: you won't learn that training has to be miserable to be effective. Because it doesn't.

"But Will It Actually Work If You're Not There In Person?"

I get asked this constantly. And I get it: there's something reassuring about having someone physically present, correcting your form in real-time, pushing you through that last rep.

But here's what I've found over years of online coaching: accountability works better than proximity.

When you're working with an online personal trainer, you can't just skip a session without your coach knowing. You can't half-arse your way through workouts or ignore your programming. The check-ins, the feedback, the consistent communication: it creates accountability that actually sticks.

Plus, the video reviews mean I still see your form. If something looks off, we address it. If you need an exercise swapped out, it happens quickly. And honestly? Most technique issues can be fixed with clear cuing and video feedback.

Common First-Month Concerns (And The Truth About Them)

"I don't have any equipment."
Not a problem. I can design effective programmes using bodyweight, household items, or minimal kit. Most of my clients start with literally nothing.

"I'm worried I won't understand the exercises."
Every exercise comes with video demonstrations and detailed coaching notes. Plus, you can message me anytime if something's unclear.

"What if I can't complete a workout?"
Then we adjust. That's the whole point of having a coach: the programme adapts to you, not the other way around.

"I'm too unfit to start."
I've worked with people at every fitness level imaginable. Your starting point is simply your starting point. No judgment, just progression from where you actually are.

What Happens After Month One?

By the end of your first month, you'll have a solid foundation, established habits, and a much clearer picture of what you're capable of. That's when the real progress starts.

We'll have built trust, established communication, and created a training approach that fits your life. From there, we can get more specific with your goals: whether that's building strength, training for a race, or finally feeling confident in your body.

The first month is just the beginning. But it's the most important month because it sets everything else up for success.

If you're thinking about starting online personal training, know that it's not about being ready or fit enough. It's about being willing to start where you are and build from there.

And I'm pretty good at meeting people exactly where they're at.
